BOMBALA DEER HUNTING PROPERTY INFORMATION

Bombala is a 2,000 acre property offering an array of vegetation for hunting foxes, hares, rabbits, duck (season in Vic - March to June, proper license required), some pigs occasionally, and deer - Samba, fallow and some red (sometimes).

No trophy fees charged.

You do not need a 4WD to get to the property but you may like to use one to get around the property.

Phone service is available in places - it can be patchy. Telstra recommended.

You will need to bring all camping, food and cooking equipment, cold storage, generators etc for your stay. Will need warmer weather clothes and blankets in winter as it get’s cold.

No need to bring firewood. Firewood provided upon arrival, and the property has plenty available for you to collect after that.

You can sight your firearms and target shoot at your campsite, of course observing all safety precautions.

Hunters appreciate the possibility of good game. SOME game can be pretty much guaranteed any day. More sought-after game such as deer provide a challenge for hunters. Hunters enjoy testing their patience and skill looking for such game. Although, game can never be guaranteed, persistence and patience should pay off. 

 

Terrain

Some terrain is quite hilly, steep in places. Can be described as mountainous. Heavily timbered including areas of very tall stands of timber, opening up into clear open paddocks. Two small, usually dry creeks, run through the property. A river makes up a major part of the property boundary.

Altitude levels range from approx 750m to 1000m (above sea level).

This property is suited to rifle and bow hunting. The terrain does dictate walk / stalk type hunting. Foxes do respond well to "whistling." Patience and skill will determine success. Extensive cover for game means that simply driving around will not be productive, therefore walking gives the best chance for success.

 

Temperature and Rainfall

Summer temperatures range from approx 10 degrees min to 30 degrees max with some summer storms.

Winter temp range from approx 5 degrees min to 15 degrees max with big frosts, some rain (can get quite wet) occasional snow falls.

 

Facilities

Camping only, but owner happy to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Guests only need to ask if they need anything.

In the event of a successful hunt, owners are happy to help harvest any meat they may want and store it during your stay. 

 

Best Time to Book

The best time to book is all year, game present all seasons.

Generally, the best time to arrive at the property is 8.30am - 2pm or after 4pm, (not after 4pm on Tuesday / Thursday in winter).

 

Property Owners Rules

Rules on the property are simple – follow and read the conditions for property access book. Common Sense – Don't shoot dogs with collars (only shoot wild / pig dog looking dogs). Don't shoot cats - might belong to owner. Obviously, no shooting of sheep or cattle. Leave gates as you find them. Hunt respectfully. Take all rubbish with you to the designated area, obey any fire restrictions especially total fire bans.

A NOTE ON WASTAGE: If you are a successful hunter, but do not wish to utilise the carcase, please let the property owners know, as depending on the type of game and location of the kill, they may choose to use the carcase for either themselves or as dog food. 

 

Property History and Information

2000 acres nestled on the NSW / VIC border. Steep hills and open farm land make up a major proportion of our landscape. Areas of thick and tall timber provide excellent cover for game.....and the hunter! A permanent river - The Bendoc, makes up a large proportion of the property boundary.

The property is surrounded by numerous pine and hardwood plantations. This is where the owner’s pest problem comes from. Game breeds up in the plantations and as numbers increase, they spread onto the property. Recent timber harvesting operations have upset the game, and evidence of their presence has become more prominent.

During the winter months, the area becomes quite wet and driving around becomes difficult - you've got to know where you're going!! Higher areas of the property provide extensive and beautiful views of the surrounding area. We are situated about 2hrs from the ski fields and 1.5 hours from the coast.

Visitors enjoy the seclusion, peacefulness, and the views, plus the bush areas and river. The river provides excellent fishing opportunities (trout in season) and a beautiful cool, shady spot in the summer. Some visitors enjoy the abundance of wildlife both native and introduced.

The Victorian portion of this property has been in the family since approx 1954. The NSW half was purchased in 1993.

This area was once a thriving gold area. Hundreds of gold hunters littered the area in search of gold. A large proportion of these were Chinese. Remains of diggers holes and mounds still litter the river banks.

The other major industry that this area was renowned for was logging. Harvesting of plantation timbers is still a major industry there, but the harvest of native timber is not so prevalent anymore. The property owner breed fine wool Merinos sheep for the Chinese and Italian markets. 

 

Tourist Attractions

Excellent opportunities for landscape photography and art exist on this property for both hunters and their families. Bushwalking too, depending on where the hunters are! Fishing and platypus watching in the river and at certain times of the year, guests are welcome to watch things like shearing, stockwork or harvesting etc happening on the property.

The owners have the usual dogs, cats, chooks and a horse. During late winter / spring there are usually poddy lambs or calves that guests are most welcome to interact with. There may also be opportunities for kids to have a "led" ride around on the horse. Kids are reminded that they are welcome to bring push / mountain bikes with them.

Bombala is a quiet, quaint little town on the banks of the Bombala River. Marketed at "PLATYPUS COUNTRY", the major industries are timber and farming with a population of about 1,500 people. It boasts decent shopping, chemist, clubs, pubs, a nursery, food outlets, a gym, a swimming pool, hardware store, doctors surgery and a newly built hospital. We also still have one bank - NAB.

Being on the river allows people to enjoy the scenic river walk around town. In the spring time, daffodils line the banks of the river. A platypus viewing platform, just out of town, is a popular stop for people passing through.

Nearby Burnima Homestead is a fully restored 1800's home on 6 acres. Tours available through the home, which is considered haunted!! Very interesting history around this property, well worth a look if you're in the area.

Nearby town of Delegate has "The Settlers Huts", a very interesting view of life from a bygone era. Open every day. A very photographed place, many have wedding photos etc done here. A beautiful place to visit. The famous McKillops bridge is also a major attraction. 86km from Delegate, but a 2-hour drive. Views are spectacular.

Nearby Bendoc is steeped in a rich history of gold mining and logging. It is home to the "big log.” Another popular photo opportunity for people passing through.

There is also a tourist drive (73km, half day) that may be of interest to some visitors. Happy to provide brochures about all of the above opportunities on arrival.

The property is 36km from Bombala, 120km Cooma, 290km Bairnsdale, 120km Merimbula.

 

Additional Supplies

Fuel and additional supplies are best sourced in Bombala. There is a well-stocked IGA supermarket, bakery, newsagent, giftshops, 2 service stations, plus a 24-hour Diesel depot, 2 pubs, Club Bombala (great raffles and food etc), a nursery and a variety of quality food outlets.

  • Most shops do the general 9am - 5pm.
  • IGA Mon - Fri 6am - 7pm, sat / sun 7.30 - 4.30.
  • Village Ford (servo) Mon - Fri 8am - 6pm, Sat 8am - 12pm, closed Sunday.
  • Caltex servo Mon - Fri 6am - 7pm, Sat 7am - 6.30pm, Sun 8am - 6.30pm.
  • Caltex depot - 24 hr diesel - unmanned, so credit / debit card required.

Unfortunately, you cannot buy bullets in Bombala. Cooma, Merimbula, Bega and Bairnsdale are the closest towns that sell bullets. Best to ensure you bring plenty.

Owners can provide wood, water and garbage bags where needed and are very friendly, helpful and happy to chat.

For each non-hunter attending any of our properties, it is compulsory to be covered by current comprehensive public liability insurance. This is a non-negotiable requirement and forms part of your booking contract. Similar to having travel insurance to go on holidays. This insurance is available by being a current member of an AHO, the SSAA or the Shooters Union before your booking is approved.

We also recommend current ambulance cover.

You enter these properties fully aware of the risks involved and do so at your own risk.
